FOOD/HEALTH/ MIGRATION
The research within my assignment was conducted by interviewing multiple subjects in person and by video calls. The subjects were both (im)migrant parents and youth from Mexico. The conversations took place at a different location for each person, either at their home or church. The interview questions were structured to learn about their experience of when they first moved to America; specifically their feelings and beliefs with the new environment and their change in routine. Most of the questions were predetermined, but it also depended on the responses the subjects gave. During some scenarios, the questions had to be either rearranged, rephrased, or replaced in order to allow the interviewee to feel comfortable and willing to respond with detail. The interview questions covered topics; such as: migration, time management, eating schedule, success, and health. The questions also allowed the subjects to discuss other concepts and feelings that they have carried along their journey, within this country. The interviews were composed by the following questions:
- Where were you born? Where do you live now?
- Can you tell me a bit about your story (or three words you would use to describe your experience) ?
- Do you work and how many hours?
- Did you work back home?
- How would you discuss your time? Are there any changes that you can identify?
- What are 3 things that affect your schedule?
- Living in the United States would you call yourself “successful”?
- What is success to you?
- How has this “success” influenced your health and persona?
- Can you compare your health now to when back home?
- It is often said that the United States has an abundance of food options, do you think this is true? If so, is your eating routine better now or worse?
- When you lived back home do you feel like you had more control over your time?
- How would you describe life in the United States?
- People usually complain about the time in the U.S, especially New York what do you think this is? Does life in this country seem rushed?
- How many times do you eat throughout your day?
- What makes most of your day: meals or snacks and why?
- What affects your own eating routine: time or work stress, both or neither? Could you explain your answer
