"The Color in Anything"
The purpose of this research project is to observe color association to processed snack foods in immigrant communities in the Bronx and identify possible reasons for it. My research found that just as the colors red and yellow are successful in marketing unhealthy fast food to people discriminately in lower income communities, they are also used to successfully market processed snack foods in bodegas, which are dominant in urban lower income communities. Success in my research was gauged by the frequency of a color selection when an immigrant residing in the Bronx was prompted with the question “Which of the following colors do you most associated to processed food snacks (i.e. chips, candy and baked goods one can find in a bodega): red, yellow, orange, black, or blue?”
